Artwork Competition

⏰Submissions close on Wednesday, 16 August.

🙋Any students

You are invited to design either a 2D artwork (paintings, posters etc. - min. A3 size) or a 3D model that highlights the theme of Science Week:

Innovation: Powering Future Industries.


📝Marks will be awarded for context, clarity, creativity and visual style.

🤩All entries need to be handed in to the Science staff room. A selection of entries will be displayed in the 200s/700s.

👯‍♂️You may submit individually or as a group of up to three.

🏆We will select TWO winners from each category.

🤑Each 3D winning submission will be awarded a $100 Officeworks voucher; and each 2D winning submission will be awarded a $50 Officeworks voucher.



Dark Matter Excursion

⏰Friday, 11 August, sessions 5 and 6

🏫GTAC

🙋50 Year 8 students

The program consists of two workshops:

Dark Gut Illumination

In this workshop, students use innovative, cutting-edge technology to illuminate the “Dark Gut”, furthering our understanding of the gut microbiome and how our health is closely related to it.


🕵️ Escape Room Game

In this workshop, students are presented with a series of scientific puzzles which they must solve using a combination of research-grade scientific equipment, logic, and critical thinking.

VR Adventures

⏰Monday, 14 August, lunchtime

🏫EBS Lab (EB13)

🙋40 students (of any year level)

⏰There are 2 x 20-minute sessions:

  • 12:45-1:05 pm
  • 1:05-1:25 pm


🙋Each session can accommodate 20 students. Therefore, there are 40 places available in total.


Students can choose their own experience/adventures, such as:

🚀Space Mission 🦁Safari 🐸Frog Dissection

💝Open Heart Surgery 🌳Nature Treks


🧑‍🏫Staff will also have the opportunity to try the VR sets from 1:30 to 2 pm.


Science Riddles

⏰Monday, 14 August

🙋Year 7 to 9 students

⏰Wednesday, 16 August

🙋Year 10 to 12 students

5 riddles will be posted on Compass on

  • Monday, 14 August (for Years 7-9)
  • Wednesday, 16 August (for Years 10-12).


Answers will need to be submitted via a Google Form.


3 students and 1 staff member that submit all correct answers the earliest, for each category, will receive a $10 canteen voucher.



Paper Bridge Competition

⏰Tuesday, 15 August, lunchtime

🏫EBS Lab (EB13)

🙋8 groups of Year 7 students

🗞️The challenge is to build the strongest paper bridge that spans between two lab benches.


📃We will provide all the materials. More details can be found on Google Classroom.

Bionics Excursion

⏰Wednesday, 16 August, 12:30 - 3 pm

🏫Bionics Institute & St Vincent's Hospital

🙋Year 10 students

🧑‍⚕️Students will visit the world-class laboratories of the Bionics Institute in East Melbourne, where researchers are working on innovative medical devices to improve hearing and vision as well as chronic and autoimmune diseases.


🏥Students will also visit the Institute's other laboratory in St Vincent's Hospital.

Science Innovation Expo

⏰Thursday, 17 August, 1 - 3 pm

🏫Exciton Science Centre & Science Gallery

🙋30 Year 9 students

🎇At the expo, students will see various innovations from all of the University of Melbourne's Science Faculties. They also have access to the Dark Matter exhibition at the Science Gallery.


✨Prior to the expo, students will visit the Exciton Science Centre at the University of Melbourne, where they will see the advanced laboratories that focus on sustainable energy research, especially the transformation of light into renewable energy.
